Lyle and Madelyne Smith Scholarship

Description:
Congratulations on your success so far and may success follow you as you go forward to reach your goals. And, whether you are a member of a Police family, or whether you are choosing Law Enforcement to be your life's work, be assured that Law Enforcement is a noble and honorable profession.
1.) Applicant must be a son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of active, retired, or deceased Tacoma Police or Pierce County Sheriff's Officers who show an aptitude and desire to receive post-high school education at a college or university of their choice.
OR-
Applicant must be a Pierce County resident who is pursuing or furthering his or her career in the Criminal Justice system.
2.) Applicant must be registered as a full-time student at a fully accredited vocational school, college, or university for the upcoming school year.
3.) Applicants must have a minimum high school, or college GPA of 3.0.
4.) Awardees may receive no more than two scholarships.
5.) Complete an essay on one of the following two topics:
a.) What person or event has been the greatest influence on your life and why? How will that influence affect your continued educational pursuits?
b.)How would you define a "successful life" ? What factors are important in achieving success? Recognizing that many successful people do not have college degrees, how will higher education help prepare you for success? Maximum length: Three (3) pages typewritten, double-spaced.
